Legislative Update Week of March 21st

Legislative Update Week of March 21st
2010 Legislative Session
The big news of the week was on Wednesday when after pressure from PFFNH members and others adversely affected by the bill, House leadership decided to “table” HB 1664 which would have raised current employee contributions to 11%. By placing the bill on the table the House now needs a 2/3 majority to remove it for floor action. This was a step in the right direction, to hold off on the bill, but we’re not out of the woods yet. This year’s finance cycle is just beginning, but you can be sure we will be watching these discussions closely.
Other major legislative action this week happened in the Senate with the passage of SB 489, which would expand gambling in New Hampshire. The bill passed with a bi-partisan 14-10 vote out of the Senate. The bill will now travel to the House where it will be heard next Tuesday morning.
Upcoming legislative action this week:
Legislation is taking place this week after what’s called “crossover.” All of the bills being heard in the House have already been heard and passed in the Senate and vice versa.

I want to thank everyone who called and emailed your Representatives in response to HB 1664. I heard first hand from the State Reps how effective your emails and calls were in stopping HB 1664. I will keep you all updated as we move forward in the budget process and for now if you or your members have any questions about any legislative action please don’t hesitate to contact me.
